Scout Basset lost her right leg in a fire while she was just an infant living in China, years before she was adopted from a government-run orphanage and brought to the United States at seven years old. But even while growing up in a family who provided her all that she needed to overcome the adversity she was facing with her disability, Basset found herself on the sidelines of all of the sports that she dreamed of participating in. Now, she is known as an American Paralympic track and field athlete — a sport that she fell in love with after receiving her first prosthetic leg for running at the age of 14. Here, she tells Yahoo Life how she learned to embrace the power of her body.
