Rare Closed Handle SPIERS Dovetailed Smoothing *SOLD*

A scarce round sided dovetailed infill smoothing plane by SPIERS of Ayr.Believed to be a SPIERS No.7a improved pattern dovetailed smoothing plane with the rare closed handle.Marked 'SPIERS AYR' on the lever cap.Fitted with a good length snecked SPIERS 21/8 inch parallel blade iron, a little over 15/8 inches remain below the slot.Matching cap iron marked 'WARRANTED STEEL'.  Both the back of the cap iron and the rear rosewood infill are stamped '1', please see close-up image.Nice tight mouth.Very good rosewood infill with a wonderfully shaped closed rear handle.A few surface scratches, pitting and staining spots.Previous owner's stamps 'R.NORDON'.All parts move freely and tighten securely.71/2 inch sole.
